At Willowbrook, Bracken, our beloved 28-year-old stallion, is a testament to this longevity. However, even he pales in comparison to the truly ancient horses we’re about to explore.

7. Orchid (50 Years)
The adorable chestnut mare Orchid celebrated her 50th birthday at an animal sanctuary in Essex. Remus Horse Sanctuary took Orchid in after she finished her career as a broodmare and was sadly abandoned due to her owner’s not seeing any use in her.
This sweet chestnut lady loved snacking on raspberries and even had her very own birthday cake for her 50th! Of course, her birthday cake was crafted from a large cabbage as opposed to an M&S caterpillar cake!
Sadly, Orchid passed away not long after her 50th birthday due to a severe colic. Her owners at Remus Sanctuary were devastated and miss her cheeky nature.
6. Magic (51 Years)
Born on June 15, 1969, in Oregon, Magic was a remarkable horse who lived to the age of 51, making her the oldest known Arabian horse in the United States at the time. Owned by Bob Manns, Magic passed away peacefully in her stall on March 25, 2020, in San Diego.
Magic spent most of her life in Southern California, where she gave birth to seven foals. Known for their longevity, Arabian horses often live long lives, and even Magic’s mother reached 44 years. Magic stayed in good health until the very end, enjoying a 90-minute trail ride just a month before she passed.
5. Scribbles (51 Years)
Scribbles, a pony of an unknown breed, reached at least 51 years old. He was born in 1958 in Cornwall, England, and lived a long, healthy life, which was credited to a nutritious diet, including a special food mix and cod liver oil.
Scribbles was last owned by Alison Eathorne, who retired in 2002 after 24 years of working as a riding pony at Strawberry Gardens Riding School in Camborne, England. The last public mention of Scribbles was in 2009 when his owner reached out to the Guinness Book of World Records, hoping to see Scribbles recognized as the longest-living pony. Since then, it is unknown what has happened to Scribbles or how long she lived for, though it’s very likely he has now passed.
4. Badger (51 Years)
A charming 51-year-old Arab x Welsh called Badger was once the holder of the title of the oldest living horse. Residing in Pembrokeshire, Wales, this former showjumper had even competed at the Horse of the Year Show under his show name Little Boy Blue.
Unfortunately, in 2004, at the ripe old age of 51, Badger passed away at his home in West Wales. This grey champion will forever be missed by the livery yard he called home, at which he was a resident for over twenty years!
3. Shayne (51 Years)
Liver chestnut Irish Draught gelding Shayne was also an elderly resident at Remus Horse Sanctuary in Essex. This handsome fellow managed to devour four large meals a day consisting of beet pulp and chaff mixed together along with alfalfa cubes, as well as cabbage for treats!
This cheeky fellow was believed to have lived so long due to his low mileage lifestyle and spritely personality, which also earned him his position as one of the yard favorites! At the age of 51, Shayne was sadly put to sleep after falling and not being able to rise. He will be sorely missed at Remus Horse Sanctuary.
2. Sugar Puff (56 Years)
We all know ponies are renowned for their cheeky yet charming nature, so it’s no surprise that a Shetland x Exmoor with the classic mealy muzzle has made it to the top three oldest horses in the world.
Standing at just 10hh, Sugar Puff was born in the UK and had taught many young riders the ropes. From Pony Club rallies to the classic gymkhana games, Sugar Puff even stayed in his last family long enough to teach multiple generations the magic of ponies.
At his home in West Sussex on the 25th of May 2007, Sugar Puff was put to sleep after experiencing multiple health issues. He was 56 years old and only “a little grey around his muzzle”, according to his long-term owner Sally Botting.
1. Old Billy (62 Years)
The oldest horse that ever lived is Old Billy. Foaled in Woolston, Lancashire, in 1760, Old Billy is so well-loved by residents that his preserved head was actually returned to the town for a local art festival.
Old Billy spent almost six decades pulling boats on the River Mersey and powering machinery for his owners and was “renowned for his stamina, as well as his volatile temper when he was hungry”.
Billy retired from his duties working with Mersey and Irwell Navigation Company in 1819 after being purchased by them in 1763. What an impressive career! After a well-deserved retirement, Old Billy died on November 27th, 1822, at the age of 62 years old!
He was such a well-loved horse that he even took part in Manchester’s celebrations of King George IV’s coronation and had regular visits from adoring fans. In 1822, people were incredibly unsentimental towards their animals, which really shows how special Billy must’ve been!
Also, quite interestingly or more morbidly, the Taxidermied head of Old Billy is on display at Warrington Museum & Art Gallery, which has been temporarily loaned from the Bedford Museum in England.
